Adding Master Project to Time Entries and Card

Some of our folks have requested the ability to have a column available in both the Time Card and Time Entries pages to show the Master Project. The existing "project" column would then be the project phases. This would be able to provide folks the opportunity to be able to search by the master project name rather than trying find the phase name.

  • By design, Core allows you to log time and expenses to projects. These projects can be phases or standard parent projects, but not main type parent projects. That is why it displays the projects without a hierarchy or without being clubbed under the master project. Maybe you can try adding the master project name to the phase names too. That way you can search for the master project name but get directly to the phase against which you would log those time entries.

  • By adding the master/parent project name to the phases, unfortunately the name becomes too long.

I will send something to Core Ideas.

The thought was folks could select the parent project in one column and then in the next column the phases that show up would be limited to the parent project, allowing it easier for some folks to be able to locate the project that they are working on.

  • Andrew, are you trying to limit what an employee see's when entering Time?  For example, one employee, doesn't necessarily need to see all the projects as a selection when entering Time, they would only need to see projects in the list that are the one's they need?

  • No we don't need to limit them, they are just struggling with searching by project number and the phases don't necessarily have the parent project name in it. Part of the challenge is some of our projects are one off's only lasting a month or two and some are 10 years long. So the projects that they enter time to on a weekly basis, could change.

Here is an example of how our projects and phases are set up:

Parent Project: 19001 - XYZ Municipal Sewer Upgrade

    Phase 1: 19001-01 - Detailed Design

    Phase 2: 19001-02 - Construction Services

  • Andrew,  If the phase naming structure contained the Parent ID - Phase Name, would that work?

  • So you are saying...

19001 - XYZ Municipal Sewer Upgrade

19001-01 - XYZ Municipal Sewer Upgrade - Detailed Design

19001-02 - XYZ Municipal Sewer Upgrade - Construction Services

It just makes the name very long

  • Andrew, in Global Settings > User Interface, you can choose how the naming convention on phases is.  Please take a look at that, and also please submit your idea to core-ideas@bqe.com.  They do sit down once a month and go over all feature requests that are submitted.
