Before we start building, let's clear up two terms you'll see everywhere in Insights, chart and dashboard. They're related but different and it's worth being precise about what each one is. A chart is a single visualization of data. It could be a bar graph, a line chart, a table, a pie chart, or a number widget.
Each chart answers one specific question. Show me the outstanding invoices by client or show me hours billed per project this month. Each chart is based on a single Insights data set. A dashboard is a collection of charts and other elements displayed together on a single screen.
An AR dashboard, for example, might have a chart showing total outstanding balance, another showing aging by segment, and a third showing invoices past due. All related, all visible at the same time. To build anything in Insights, you always start by creating a dashboard and then add charts to it. You can have as many charts as you want on a dashboard, and you can mix charts from different data sets on the same screen.
To summarize, a chart is a single visualization of data. A dashboard is where one or more charts are displayed.
