Can I change the account used for retained earnings?

No. As of now, you cannot change the default Retained Earnings - 3900 account in BQE CORE as it is used to track the year-on-year and total retained earnings based on your fiscal year settings. Check CORE Help Center for details. While you have the option to change other system accounts in Settings > Accounting, this account is fixed and cannot be replaced by another account.
