Withholding Categories

Overview

Withholding categories are a list of categories or types used to group different withholdings. They are used while creating withholding codes for payroll deductions. Core allows you to define a list of withholdings that represents various types of withholding deductions used by your company. You can then assign these withholdings to the employees for their payroll depending on the withholding applicable to them, e.g., 401 (k), 401 (k) loans, child support, etc. You can also add an employer-side contribution to the withholding that adds to the total amount being withheld.

Wage Garnishment

In case of wage garnishment, an employer has to deduct money from the employee's wages because of a court order in a specific order (Child Support, Federal Debt, State & Local Tax Debt, Credit Card Debt, and Other Debts). The garnished wages are used to satisfy a debt on which the employee has defaulted. This wage garnishment continues till the debt is paid off or other payment arrangements are made with the court or the creditor.

Add Withholding Categories

Core allows you to create multiple withholding categories for payroll purposes. These are used to calculate the withholding deductions on paychecks.

To add a withholding category:

    1. Open the Withholding Categories screen from the side menu > Lists > Payroll.

    2. Click Add on the right panel.

    3. Enter the required information in the top row of the grid:

      • Category: Name or type of withholding category, e.g., Loan Repayment, Health Insurance, Garnishments, Section 401(k), etc.

      • Percentage: This is a percentage of withholding amount for the category.

      • Wage Garnishment: In case of wage garnishment, an employer has to deduct money from the employee's wages because of a court order in a specific order (Child Support, Federal Debt, State & Local Tax Debt, Credit Card Debt, and Other Debts). This wage garnishment continues till the debt is paid off or other payment arrangements are made with the court or the creditor.
